Cooling a Live Music Venue at Temperance, Leamington Spa
Temperance is a unique venue in the heart of Leamington Spa, operating as a café and art gallery by day and transforming into a bar and live music venue by night. Located within a Grade II listed building in the town’s Old Town area, the venue plays a central role in the local cultural scene.
The building’s character and layout presented specific challenges when it came to temperature control, particularly within the basement gig room.
The Challenge
The gig room had no existing cooling system and, during peak summer months, temperatures regularly exceeded 35°C. This created an uncomfortable environment for both performers and audience members, particularly during live events with capacities of over 50 people.
As the space is located in the basement, there were additional constraints around available room for internal equipment and suitable routes for external pipework. Any solution also needed to protect the venue’s capacity and avoid the loss of seating.
The Solution
The owner of Temperance, Adrian Gains, contacted Celsius Design Ltd to develop a cooling solution that would work within the building’s limitations while maintaining the venue’s usability.
Celsius Design designed and installed a single under-ceiling air conditioning system, carefully positioned within a small cove that was already being used as a wine rack. This approach allowed the system to be integrated discreetly without impacting the layout or reducing audience capacity.
The installed system is rated at 7kW and provides both heating and cooling, allowing the space to remain comfortable throughout the year.
System Features
The under-ceiling air conditioning system includes:
-
Combined heating and cooling functionality
-
A 24/7 programmable timer
-
A hard-wired control system for reliable operation
This setup ensures consistent temperature control while remaining simple for staff to manage.
Installation and Delivery
Celsius Design undertook the entire installation, including power supply and all associated electrical wiring.
All work was carried out during normal working hours, with Celsius engineers working around a fully operational café. The installation was completed without disruption to daily trading or customer experience.
The Result
Temperance now benefits from effective, reliable cooling in its gig room, creating a far more comfortable environment for performers and guests alike. The solution respects the constraints of a listed building, preserves the venue’s full capacity, and supports year-round use of the space.
