Cooling & Ventilation Upgrade for Jewers Doors, Biggleswade

Jewers Doors, a long-established UK family-run manufacturer of industrial and aircraft hangar doors, approached Celsius Design Ltd after experiencing high summertime temperatures within their main production facility in Biggleswade.

The combination of warm weather, welding processes, and a lack of powered ventilation resulted in uncomfortable working conditions and poor air circulation across the shop floor. Jewers required a tailored cooling and extraction solution to create a safer, fresher, and more productive environment for staff.

The Celsius Design Solution

Celsius Design created a complete ventilation and cooling scheme based on achieving 10 air changes per hour, in line with recommendations from the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) for production areas where fumes or moisture are present.

The full design included:

  • 5 EcoCooling evaporative coolers for low-energy chilled air

  • 5 Celsius extraction fans for powerful warm-air and fume removal

This balanced system ensures that clean, cooled, filtered air is supplied while stale, warm, or contaminated air is efficiently extracted, delivering year-round improvements in indoor conditions.

Phase 1: Extraction Fan Installation

As part of the project’s first phase, Celsius Design installed five wall-mounted extraction fans, each rated at:

  • 12,000 m³/hr airflow capacity

  • 64 dBA at 3 metres in free-field conditions

Each fan was supplied with a variable speed controller, allowing precise airflow management depending on production activity and environmental conditions.

These extraction fans immediately enhanced the workspace by:

  • Removing excess heat from the shop floor

  • Extracting welding fumes and airborne contaminants

  • Providing cleaner, fresher air for operatives

  • Improving safety and comfort across key workstations

Phase 2: EcoCooling Installation

Jewers Doors has committed to completing the system with the installation of five EcoCooling evaporative coolers in the next phase scheduled for spring.

When installed, these units will deliver:

  • Fresh, filtered, chilled air directly into the production area

  • Energy-efficient cooling using just 1.2kW per unit

  • A balanced supply-and-extract system for optimal performance during peak summer temperatures

This will complete the full Celsius-designed scheme, ensuring Jewers benefits from a sustainable, low-cost alternative to traditional air conditioning.

Results

  • Immediate improvements in air quality and temperature control

  • Effective reduction in fumes from welding operations

  • A more comfortable and productive working environment

  • A phased upgrade plan delivering benefits from day one

  • A future-ready cooling system designed around EcoCooling technology
